Why Trap Birds? Bird trapping makes sense and is a humane form of control often adopted by building maintenance persons, municipalities, counties and even the US Government. Simply using repellents or deterrents in bird control is often not enough. Actual trapping and removing of birds and the relocation (except for pigeons) is the preferred form of control as this does not lead to expensive repellents or deterrents that in most cases simply do not work. |

How To Trap Birds The Recommended way to trap birds is to use a good quality live trap such as the Havahart line of traps and place the trap in an area that is flat, dry and easily accessed by birds. Bird trapping begins by training the birds to enter the trap easily. Fresh bird feed applied in the early morning works best. Never apply bird feed to wet ground or surfaces. Make sure the surface is dry. If necessary, attach the bird trap to a section of wood paneling. Next, begin the "pre-bait process". This is accomplished by using a quality bird feed and applying it inside the trap while leaving the doors tied open with a twist tie or wire. Leaving the doors open will entice the birds to enter the cage and feed. By leaving the doors open for a week or longer you can train the birds to enter the cage just like a bird feeder. After you have trained the birds and feel comfortable with their feeding patterns, start trapping. After trapping, using gloves, remove all birds except 1 bird and place birds into a nap sack or solid sack. Leave 1 bird in the trap at all times to entice other birds to enter the trap. Humane disposal is then recommended or relocate the birds to a different area. Relocation will work for most species of birds but will not work for feral pigeons. Feral Pigeons should be disposed of according to your City, State or County Agricultural Department recommendations. |
